We are in evil days indeed, but hope is a virtue and despair is a sin.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<pre>\n<br \/>Psalm 49  <i>Audite haec, omne<\/i>\n<br \/>\n<br \/>1  Hear this, all you peoples;\n<br \/>hearken, all you who dwell in the world, *\n<br \/> you of high degree and low, rich and poor together.\n<br \/>\n<br \/>2  My mouth shall speak of wisdom, *\n<br \/> and my heart shall meditate on understanding.\n<br \/>\n<br \/>3  I will incline my ear to a proverb *\n<br \/> and set forth my riddle upon the harp.\n<br \/>\n<br \/><b>4  Why should I be afraid in evil days, *<\/b>\n<br \/> when the wickedness of those at my heels surrounds me,\n<br \/>\n<br \/>5  The wickedness of those who put their trust in their goods, *\n<br \/> and boast of their great riches?\n<br \/>\n<br \/>6  We can never ransom ourselves, *\n<br \/> or deliver to God the price of our life;\n<br \/>\n<br \/>7  For the ransom of our life is so great, *\n<br \/> that we should never have enough to pay it,\n<br \/>\n<br \/>8  In order to live for ever and ever, *\n<br \/> and never see the grave.\n<br \/>\n<br \/>9  For we see that the wise die also;\n<br \/>like the dull and stupid they perish *\n<br \/> and leave their wealth to those who come after them.\n<br \/>\n<br \/>10  Their graves shall be their homes for ever,\n<br \/>their dwelling places from generation to generation, *\n<br \/> though they call the lands after their own names.\n<br \/>\n<br \/>11  Even though honored, they cannot live for ever; *\n<br \/> they are like the beasts that perish.\n<br \/>\n<br \/>12  Such is the way of those who foolishly trust in themselves, *\n<br \/> and the end of those who delight in their own words.\n<br \/>\n<br \/>13  Like a flock of sheep they are destined to die;\n<br \/>Death is their shepherd; *\n<br \/> they go down straightway to the grave.\n<br \/>\n<br \/>14  Their form shall waste away, *\n<br \/> and the land of the dead shall be their home.\n<br \/>\n<br \/>15  But God will ransom my life; *\n<br \/> he will snatch me from the grasp of death.\n<br \/>\n<br \/>16  Do not be envious when some become rich, *\n<br \/> or when the grandeur of their house increases;\n<br \/>\n<br \/>17  For they will carry nothing away at their death, *\n<br \/> nor will their grandeur follow them.\n<br \/>\n<br \/>18  Though they thought highly of themselves while they lived, *\n<br \/> and were praised for their success,\n<br \/>\n<br \/>19  They shall join the company of their forebears, *\n<br \/> who will never see the light again.\n<br \/>\n<br \/>20  Those who are honored, but have no understanding, *\n<br \/> are like the beasts that perish.\n<br \/><\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Psalm 49 (1-13) was the Psalm for last Sunday in the ECUSA lectionary.
