{"id":106,"date":"2006-03-01T04:59:00","date_gmt":"2006-03-01T04:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eclecticamateur.wordpress.com\/2006\/03\/01\/lent"},"modified":"2006-03-01T04:59:00","modified_gmt":"2006-03-01T04:59:00","slug":"lent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.znfrey.com\/blog\/2006\/03\/lent.html\/","title":{"rendered":"Lent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From an old e-quaintance, <span class=\"comments-post\">Marty Helgesen, and last seen online at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.splendoroftruth.com\/curtjester\/\">The Curt Jester<\/a>, comes a little ditty about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.splendoroftruth.com\/curtjester\/archives\/005793.php\">joys of the new liturgical season<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Around 1990 an Episcopalian friend at work, who was born Jewish and raised as an atheist or agnostic, was complaining that Christmas isn&#8217;t the only Christian holiday that&#8217;s been commercialized. Easter has, too, with the emphasis on fashions. She said her favorite season is Lent because it&#8217;s completely spiritual. (It is hard to commercialize a season based on penance and self-denial.) Completely ignoring her real reason for liking Lent and the context of the original song I wrote the following words to the tune of &#8220;Raindrops on Roses&#8221; from <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">The Sound of Music<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>     Sackcloth and ashes, and days without eating,<br \/>    Mortification and nights without sleeping,<br \/>    A hair shirt that scratches, a nettle that stings,<br \/>    These are a few of my favorite things.<\/p>\n<p>          When it&#8217;s Christmas,<br \/>         When the tree&#8217;s lit,<br \/>         When the cards are sent,<br \/>         I simply remember my favorite things,<br \/>         And then I can&#8217;t wait till Lent.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On that note, may you have a holy Lent.  I may empty out the posting queue, but I shall try to give up <span style=\"font-style:italic;\">reading<\/span> blogs and other non-essential Internet this Lent.
