“So, what have you been reading?”

I was asked this by a friend tonight, and it made me think.  What have I been reading lately?  (I’m only going to count real, bound, ink-on-dead-trees books.  Blogs, Facebook, newsfeeds, and webcomics will not count for this purpose.)

Let’s see: fitness, gardening, more fitness, Carmelite spirituality, stage combat, economics, and bits of BritLit.

In case anyone wonders why this blog is named “Eclectic Amateur”, this should help explain.

Nice to see my book’s getting read! Although I have to admit, the e-book version is actually a little cooler, IMO since you can jump back and forth between the text and notes. But I digress. I’m delighted to see my own ink-on-dead-trees piece mentioned. 🙂

    Hi Jenn,

Sorry for the delay – your comment was caught in my spam filter.

I should probably give your book a real review sometime. After requesting it a few times from the library, I broke down and paid for my own dead trees copy.

I will be teaching a Stage Combat class beginning this fall, and I will be using your book as a basis of the class (along with supplemental material from Dale Girard’s Actors On Guard). I think you hit a sweet spot with the book – it’s broad, and simple but not over-simplistic, and the bibliography is helpful for going deeper in any particular area. I’m not aware of any other stage combat book which hits quite that balance.

Also, the chapter on using Asian sword techniques on stage is unique, as far as I know.

It’s a good book, and I’m happy to recommend it. Thanks for writing it.

    peace,
    Zach

@zach I’m so glad to hear you say that, as that’s exactly what I was going for.

I usually use my book plus chapters from Girard’s as well: I find it a good balance. What school are you teaching at, may I ask? ~Jenn
